What to do now

Common dental emergencies

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and gently clean around the tooth with floss. Take over-the-counter pain relief if suitable for you, and call us to arrange a check.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Hold it by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly in milk. Try to put it back in its socket, or keep it in milk, and come to the clinic immediately; the sooner, the better the chance of saving it.

Broken or chipped tooth

Keep any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling. Call us for an appointment.

Swelling or a gum abscess

Do not put heat on your face. Call us the same day. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown safe and avoid chewing on that side. Call us to have it checked and refitted or replaced.

Bleeding after an extraction

Bite firmly on clean gauze or a folded cloth for 30 minutes without checking. Avoid rinsing, spitting and hot drinks. If it keeps bleeding, call us.

Questions

Dental emergency questions

Can I be seen the same day?

Call the clinic as early as you can. We will ask about your symptoms, give advice and offer the earliest available appointment.

Which painkiller can I take for toothache?

Over-the-counter pain relief can help until you see a dentist. Follow the instructions on the pack, and ask a pharmacist first if you take other medicines, are pregnant or have a health condition. Never put a tablet directly on the gum.

Should I go to a hospital?

Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if you have swelling spreading to your eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to your face or jaw.

What if it happens on a Sunday?

On Sundays we see pre-booked appointments only. Call or WhatsApp us and we will advise you. For the serious symptoms listed on this page, go to a hospital.

What to do while you wait to see the dentist

  • Toothache: rinse gently with warm water and clean between the teeth to remove trapped food. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Knocked-out tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. Do not scrub it. Keep it moist in milk if you can and get to a dentist straight away.
  • Broken tooth: rinse your mouth, keep any fragment, and call us.
  • Swelling: a cold compress on the outside of the cheek may help until you are seen.

If you have swelling in the face or neck with a fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department without delay.

Call +91 78887 12136 or WhatsApp +91 97100 01362 and tell us what has happened, so we can advise you and find the earliest suitable time.
